A large, successful, privately owned business in the retail, industry, was preparing for a significant leadership transition. The company had identified three promising next-generation leaders across different business areas ready to step into senior roles. However, the company lacked a structured, repeatable process to develop these leaders and align their growth with the company's strategic goals.

Challenges

At the outset of the engagement the company faced several key challenges:

  • Industry Disruption: Senior management was concerned that the rapid pace of industry disruption and shifting market demands would outpace the development of internal leadership talent. Although promising leaders had been identified, there was urgency to create a clear plan to cultivate their skills and prepare them for future challenges.
  • Leader Transition: Industry reliance on informal, on-the-job training, focused mainly on technical skills, had created a gap between company's strategic goals and next-generation leaders' ability to execute effectively in a fast-changing world that was moving quickly online.
  • Cultural Shift: While stakeholders recognized that succession preparation extended beyond technical expertise, formal leadership development at senior levels presented a significant cultural shift and implementation challenges.

Results

The engagement ran for one year and expanded to include over forty leader and eight hundred participants. The process focused on the leader as catalysts for change and provided opportunities to grown for everyone involved. Key areas of development:
